In Johor Bahru, there is a saying that "one mountain, one school, one temple" refers to "Johor Bahru Chinese Association Yishan", "Huan Johor School" and "Johor Bahru Ancient Temple". From the yearning for ancestors, persistence in national education, and reverence for gods, witnessing the immortal civilization are complementary to each other. Huanrou School just celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. This century-old store started as an elementary school and a middle school, and then established a junior college class in 1975. In 1990, it successfully applied and was approved to transform into Southern College. In 2013, it was upgraded to Southern University. Every link of the century-old cultivation of people to form the "Huanrou School Village" is the harvest of the hard work of the Chinese community in Xinshan.
Looking back on the twists and turns of the Chinese education path over the past century, without the support of the government, the achievements of independent middle schools that have flourished like a hundred flowers can be said to be a miracle around the world. In addition to relying on the cooperation between school directors and teachers, private enterprises have made great contributions to investing in Chinese education. In March last year, when Datuk Kwong Han Kuang, managing director of Nirvana Group, went to the Southern University in Johor Bahru to attend the publication launch ceremony of the "Johor Chinese Local Chronicle - New Village in Kulaijaya District Volume 1", he had already promised to donate GH¢100,000 to the school. After watching the "Step by Step" video of the founding of the school, he was deeply moved by the cause of national education and promised on the spot to increase the donation to NT$1 million as a construction fund for Southern University College. Taking advantage of the occasion when a group of 20 people from the Board of Directors and school representatives of Southern University came to the Chinese Cultural Stele Forest to experience the cultural garden of paradise on December 16, Nirvana Group also handed over the check to the school on the spot. Participants include: Dato Zhang Wenqiang, Dato Tan Lian Shun, Huang Xunji, Peng Guilong, Dr. Zhang Ruifa, Associate Professor Zhu Jiahua, Professor Wang Runhua, Professor He Qiliang and others. Nirvana Group Managing Director Kwong Han Kuang, Chairman Datuk Hu Yaqiao, Group Executive Director Kwong Yiu Nian, Stele Forest consultants Foo Yong Kong and Yang Jinrong also accompanied the visit to the park.
In the local Stele Forest, there is no other monument that has connections with Southern University than Mr. Xiao Wanxiang. This sage of Chinese education who is a philanthropist and educator is not only the chairman of Kuanrou Middle School, but also the land donor of Southern College. He served as the chairman of Johor Bahru Kuan Yew Secondary School in 1961. At that time, he led the board of directors to raise the voice of Chinese schools across the country and decided not to accept the transformation into a national high school and to maintain the use of Chinese as the medium of education. This was a wise move that allowed Kuan Yew and Chinese education to become what it is today. Once Southern College was approved in 1990, this philanthropic old man decided to donate 24 acres of school land to develop education. This act of charity became a legend.
When modern education replaced private school education, the medium for writing was mostly computer keyboards instead of handwriting and paper. The pen-and-ink calligraphy that was part of the daily lives of our predecessors has now been sublimated into a cultural and artistic masterpiece, but Xiao's calligraphy talent is still little known. In his early years, Mr. Xiao gained knowledge through self-study and hard work. When he was in his sixties, he began to study calligraphy. He loved the calligraphy of Song Xiang, a talented Hakka scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. Yang Jinrong, the consultant of the Stele Forest, suggested that Xiao's works be erected in the Stele Forest and informed him of the whereabouts of the calligraphy. Xiao's original calligraphy was hung in the secretariat office of the board of directors of Kuanrou Middle School. After contacting Sister Hua Ling, who has served Kuanrou Middle School for many years, the reason for having her work engraved in the Stele Forest was achieved. Sister Hua Ling also revealed that Mr. Xiao was very hospitable. Even after stepping down as a director, he would still host a banquet every year in New Hong Kong for the principals and directors of Kuan Middle School to express his concern for Chinese education. This work is a cursive calligraphy gift from the first chapter of "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" to Kuanrou Middle School when he was 91 years old:
Explanation:
The rolling Yangtze River flows eastward, and the waves wash away the heroes. Right and wrong, success or failure turn around in vain. The green hills are still there, and the sunset turns red several times.
The white-haired fisherman and woodcutter on the Nagisa River is used to watching the autumn moon and spring breeze. Happy reunion over a pot of wine. Many things in ancient and modern times are all talked about with laughter.
Mr. Xiao, who has seen many glorious years, deeply understands that fame and wealth only last for a moment, and only by turning it into a career that benefits all sentient beings can it become eternal. Everyone who has come into contact with Mr. Xiao unanimously talks about his human touch. When a group of members of the Xiao Family Association visited the Stele Forest in July, they mentioned how the elderly Mr. Xiao took care of the development of the Xiao Family Association when he came from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur. Therefore, he must see the monument of Xiao Wanxiang during this trip. This experience of Mr. Xiao's way of dealing with others through other people's words added to his Confucian businessman charm.
It may not be necessary for enterprises to give back to the society. When Chen Lianshun visited Xiao Wanxiang's calligraphy inscription, he said with great experience: "Twenty-five years ago, there was Xiao Wanxiang, and 25 years later, there was Kuang Hanguang." This means that they are also businessmen, and they must do their part to give back to the national cultural cause.
