Overview: He Shao Ji was one of the most influential calligraphers of late Qing Dynasty. His calligraphy prowess is simply legendary. He honed his calligraphy skills by studying Yan Zhen Qing’s calligraphy distinction. He later enriched his scholarly portfolio with ancient epigraphy (eg. calligraphy on the stone or tablet) dating back to the Northern Dynasties. His lifelong learning aspirations took him to another level, mastering ‘Zhuan Shu’ and ‘Li Shu’ calligraphy at the age of 60. His ‘Kai Shu’ is principally driven by Yan Zhen Qing’s school of thought. He’s calligraphy may look ‘expansive’ at first glance, but it is cleverly presented within the confines of a written visual art. The incorporation of the Northern Dynasties inspired stone inscriptions makes his calligraphy artwork even more distinctive. This is further enriched with the Ou Yang Xun and Ou Yang Tong calligraphy styles where ‘dense’ writing and ‘proximity’ alignment are the highlights. If you study He’s calligraphy closely, you would find the spirit of ‘Zhang He Nǚ Mu Zhi” and “Dao Yin Bei. All these qualities make He’s calligraphy exceptional.
