Overview: Master Zhu Mo’s ancestral roots lead to Le Qing, Zhe Jiang. He was one of the accomplished monks of Yandang Shan. Master Zhu Mo’s monkhood name was Chen De An. He was revered as an eminent Buddhist monk throughout his life. Master Zhu Mo was initiated into monkhood under the tutelage of Master Di Xian of Guan Zong Temple, and nourished his spiritual wisdom with the guidance from Master Tai Xu. He acquired the calligraphy and painting artistry from Gao Jian Fu of the Ling Nan stream. The eruption of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 forced him to seek refuge in Hong Kong and Macau where he remained committed to the teachings of Buddhism. He was a columnist for “Jue Zhe” (transliterated as ‘The Awakened Mind’) and “Wu Jin Deng” (The Light of Eternity). He arrived in Penang in May 1954 to take up the role as a teacher at Phor Tay School. He founded the Malaysian Buddhist Association in 1959 and became the Chief Monk of the organization for many terms. He then established the Malaysian Buddhist Institute in 1969, being the principal for many terms as well. Master Zhu Mo was conferred a ‘Datukship’ by the Head of State (Yang Di-Pertua Negeri) of Penang in 1998. He was also a consultant to Persatuan Seni Tulis Malaysia and the Malaysian Buddhist Association. His noted publications include “The Calligraphy and Painting Compilation of Master Zhu Mo” and “Zhuan Calligraphy and Painting Compilation”. Master Zhu Mo was an accomplished calligrapher and painter specializing in Zhuan-driven seal-carving calligraphy and poetry. The highly respected figure established his reputation through his well-learned artistry. His calligraphy exudes a profile of talent and moral integrity alongside ingenuity.
