Overview: Shen Mu Yu (also known as Datuk Sim Mow Yu) is revered as the most notable warrior of Chinese Education development in Malaysia. He was the chairman of The United Chinese School Teachers’ Association of Malaysia, consultant to Persatuan Seni Tulis Malaysia and Malaysia Contemporary Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Association and chairman of Pertubuhan Confucius Melaka. Sim was the first overseas Chinese recipient of Taiwan’s National Cultural Award. His stellar resume also includes being the principal of Melaka Common Elementary School 1, SRJK (C) Pay Teck, SRJK (C) Pay Fong 1, SRJK (C) Ping Ming and Seng Cheong Night School, all of them located in Melaka. Sim was certified by the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest serving principal in Malaysia. In honour of his scholarly contribution to the community, Melaka’s Cheng Ho Museum incorporated the ‘Sim Mow Yu’s Calligraphy Gallery’ in 2007. In 2011, ‘Sim Mow Yu’s Calligraphy Museum’ opened in Melaka. Sim’s calligraphy drew inspiration from Yan Zhen Qing, Zhao Meng Fu and Liu Gong Quan. It is full of splendour, awe-inspiring and sterling. The calligraphy structure is solid; the strokes are robust, courageous and high-spirited. His unique composition earns him the ‘Shen’ calligraphy accolade.
