Overview: Pan Shou hailed from Nan An, Fu Jian. He had an original name of “Guo Qú” and a “Yun Weng” nickname. A distinguished calligrapher and poet, Pan Shou was also conferred an honorary doctorate by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. He was the secretary-general of Nanyang University, editor of Lat Pau (first Chinese daily in Singapore), principal of Chung Hwa High School (Muar, Johor), and secretary-general of Nanyang Federation of China Relief Fund (in aid of China’s struggle against Japanese invasion). Mr. Tan Kah Kee was the chairman of the organization then. Pan preferred the upright stroking technique coupled with great verve. His calligraphy is unpretentious, casual and natural, with emphasis on the beauty in simplicity and dynamism. Modern era’s calligrapher, Yu Ping Bo, labelled Pan’s calligraphy ‘a showcase of natural, unrestrained and heroic demeanour’. Another notable calligrapher, Qian Zhong Shu, commended that Pan’s calligraphy would be able to turn beauty into charm by incorporating the ancient Zhuan and Li styles into his Xing Shu calligraphy, as if one were sailing on a boat filled with all kinds of the goodness of art.
