《西苑诗》是文征明五十六岁在京任翰林院侍诏时所作,内容描述宫城西以太液池为中心的御苑景色。文征明书写此卷时应已八十五岁,为其晚年佳作之一。书法温润秀劲,稳重老成,法度谨严而意态生动。以为王书为根基,博众诸家,使转纵横布白完美,骨气沉稳,婉转流丽,丰妍柔媚,潇洒风流。

Overview: ‘Xi Yuan Shi’ was first produced by Wen Zheng Ming at the age of 56 as a liaison officer of Cultural Department. The poem portrays the scenic beauty revolving around a lake of the Western Garden within the palace vicinity. He compiled a complete ‘Xi Yuan Shi’ at the age of 85, marking a masterpiece of his later life. With a good-natured and well-knit calligraphy style, Wen’s works are synonymous with all the traits you would expect from a highly experienced calligrapher. Based on the ‘Wang Shu’ foundation, Wen’s calligraphy earns the respect from scholars of different schools of thought where his works are a reflection of his suave and self-assured personality, so elegant and persuasive, yet possess hints of gentleness.
